Expo 2020 Dubai in collaboration with Cartier inaugurated the Women’s Pavilion. The initiative is under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the UAE Gender Balance Council and President of the Dubai Women Establishment.
The two-day opening programme included a series of specially curated talks with influential guests from a variety of sectors and backgrounds: Italian actress Monica Bellucci, Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, Irina Bokova, Former Director General of UNESCO; Zarifa Ghafari, activist and politician, youngest Afghan mayor, and many more.
“Because when women thrive, humanity thrives”
It is the first pavilion ever dedicated to women in the history of world fairs and revolves around the principle “Because when women thrive, humanity thrives”.
The pavilion was designed by four women: French architect Laura Gonzalez, Dubai-born artist Kholoud Sharafi, French light designer Pauline David and French-Tunisian multidisciplinary artist El Seed.
Other women, actresses, directors, screenwriters, etc., gave their contribution to the pavilion’s content.
In the first hall, dark but lit by a galaxy of stars, hung on the wall are frames representing women such as Sheikha Fatima bin Mubarak, the UAE’s Mother of the Nation and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Emmeline Pankhurst who led ‘The Suffragettes’ for women’s voting rights in the UK, and others.
The second one invites visitors to discover a Virtual Reality film, showcasing stories of women from all over the world, as they navigate through their experiences.
The third and final section brings an exclusive audio-visual art piece to life, reflecting women’s voices across the globe.
During the six months the pavilion will host talks and events inviting diverse speakers to attend. The aim is to celebrate women’s achievements and contributions to the society and raise awareness on gender equality and the importance to create a more inclusive society.
